| Day 6 |
ANTARCTIC PENINSULA
| |
We will spend five full days cruising the Antarctic Peninsula, the most northerly and accessible part of Antarctica, and its surrounding islands. Landings are subject to local conditions, but typical calls include Cuverville Island, with its 10,000-strong Gentoo penguin population; Paradise Bay, wreathed by glaciers; Deception Island, a dramatic sunken volcano caldera and a former whaling station, with hot springs; Hannah Point, with its stupendous bird and elephant seal colonies; and Port Lockroy, a former British Antarctic Survey Base that is now a UK Antarctic Heritage Trust Historic Site and Monument. Voyages through the mountain-lined Lemaire, Neumayer, Errera, and other protected channels are also scheduled. Additional Zodiac excursions occur whenever possible, as well as visits to scientific stations with tours by staff members.
