Departure Dates: 10/10/2008

“Arms and the man I sing,” wrote Virgil of Aeneas, who, “forc’d by Fate,” “expell’d and exil’d, left the Trojan shore.” The Aeneid is a story of inherited glory—the glory that passed from fallen Troy to Rome. On a voyage forged by the poetry of Virgil, we will retrace Aeneas’ epic journey. En route, we investigate the many layers of history and myth in the Trojan wanderer’s legendary ports of call: from the “windswept plain” of Ilium, voyage in the wake of Aeneas to ancient Mediterranean sites. We navigate past the Strophades Islands, where Aeneas was blown off course and assaulted by Harpies, and continue by way of Sicily to Carthage, where Aeneas won the love of Queen Dido. Our voyage concludes in Naples, for a visit the Phlegraean Fields, entry-point to the Underworld and the setting for Aeneas’s brief reunion with his father, Anchises.

The unique atmosphere of Mediterranean life, as it exists today, was built upon millennia of cultural movements, invasions, and religious transitions. Their monuments remain all around, each influencing, commenting upon, and building upon one another. This autumn voyage aboard Corinthian II will create a superb sense of this history—this interaction between cultures, faiths, and ideas—that changes the character of a place, while retaining its continuity.

Arriving in Naples, we wander through Pompeii, to get a sense of the remarkable wealth and high standards of living in early Imperial Rome. Then we explore Palermo and Monreale, where Norman and Arabic influences mingle with the Byzantine and Romanesque to produce stunning cathedrals. The Tunisian cities of Carthage and Kairouan, Malta, and Crete, Rhodes, and Sardis—all were ancient and medieval centers of fruitful cultural interaction. We pay our respects at the cemeteries of Gallipoli, where members of many nations fell together during the memorable World War I battle. Finally, we head to Istanbul, where the ancients founded an “eastern Rome,” which became Christian Byzantium and then a Turkish metropolis; and Thessaloniki, where artifacts of Macedonian tombs mingle with Greek Orthodox churches.

Departure Dates: 7/29/2009

One of the pivotal figures in early Christian history, Saul of Tarsus, later called St. Paul, authored one of the greatest sea sagas of the ancient world. Spreading the Gospel through much of the Mediterranean by a combination of faith, fortune (both good and bad), soaring oratory and guile, his stories and teachings form much of the canonical New Testament. On this voyage aboard Corinthian II, we will follow in the footsteps of St. Paul and learn about the culture of the ancient Mediterranean at the first flowering of Christianity. In Athens we see the rock where, in the mid-1st century, Paul preached his sermon on “the Unknown God,” and at Thessaloniki and Philippi—an important stop on his apostolic mission — we enter the churches and basilicas that are among Christianity’s earliest existing monuments. Journeying to Ephesus in present-day Turkey, we explore the very amphitheater where Paul spoke, vividly recounted in Acts xix 23-40. Our voyage also encompasses the island of Rhodes, where Paul was famously shipwrecked

Unlike their bigger and better known counterparts, these islands have preserved their architectural and cultural treasures intact. This spectacular voyage will ply the Aegean waters in pursuit of pristine, undeveloped destinations aboard the 114-guest Corinthian II. Each day will find us amid ravishing vistas, from forgotten ancient ruins and tucked-away Byzantine chapels to hidden harbors and idyllic villages. We will explore the whitewashed villages on the island of Amorgos and visit Chios, purported to be Homer’s birthplace. At far-flung Samothraki, we’ll conjure Homer’s vision of Poseidon observing the salvos of the Trojan War and crown our journey on the peaceful island of Limnos. On many evenings we’ve included free time in port to graze the shops and streets at leisure, and take in the authentic Greek ambience. Though many of our destinations are well off the beaten tourist path, we’ll call on some famous locales as well: we inaugurate our voyage in Athens, the cultural home of the Western world.

Departure Dates: 10/16/2009

History, they say, is written by the victors, but school taught us to read between the lines. Even though the ancient world was dominated by men, there were powerful women who shaped the events of their time and influenced the course of history. Our voyage will be in search of these women and the places where they lived or ruled, places of peerless beauty and singular importance. In Bodrum, the ancient Halicarnassus, consider Artemisia, who ruled the city, built the Mausoleum—one of the Seven Wonders of the World—and commanded a battleship in the sea battle of Salamis (480 B.C.).We will come to know Queen Zenobia, ruler of fabled Palmyra, who defeated a Roman force in battle and went on to invade Egypt. We will also reflect on women whose names were lost in the current of history. Such a person is Kallipateira of Rhodes, the only woman ever to attend the ancient games at Olympia. Our unique and memorable voyage will appropriately end in Egypt’s Alexandria, the city founded by Alexander the Great in the late 4th century B.C. Ruling Egypt from famed Alexandria after Alexander’s death were the Ptolemies, whose 300-year-old rule concluded with Cleopatra

Travel Style: Small Ship Ocean & Adventure Cruises
Departure Dates: 6/4/2009

“We make war that we may live in peace,” wrote Aristotle. Conflict and war are at the heart of human drama, and to study the history of war is to peer into the human condition. On this unique voyage we will explore sites and events dating from antiquity to World War II that have shaped the course of Western history and civilization. The stories have come down to us from ancient writers, including Herodotus, Thucidides and Plutarch, as well as from countless modern historians. They describe events known now by single names, indelibly associated with our history–Marathon, Salerno, Libya, Crete, Sicily. Stand on the plain of Marathon and recall the seminal events of the early 5th century B.C., when democratic Athens and its allies defeated the armies of the mighty Persian Empire; sail into the same harbor of Sicily’s Syracuse where the Athenians suffered a terrible defeat some 85 years after Marathon; and relive some of the most important World War II battles that took place in Crete, North Africa, Sicily and the Italian mainland.

linkImage Mediterranean Music Festival Cruise
Destination: Europe
Countries: Greece
Travel Style: Small Ship Ocean & Adventure Cruises
Departure Dates: 9/6/2008

“Architecture,” Goethe said, “is frozen music.” And when exquisite music is heard in magnificent surroundings, one is immersed in a universe of wonder. It is our pleasure to invite you on a musical adventure from Athens to Venice, where you will have the chance to hear special concerts in the most spectacular ancient, medieval and Renaissance settings located along the coasts of Greece, and its islands, Albania, Montenegro and Croatia; as well as enjoy onboard chamber recitals while the ship sails the indigo waters and the Aegean, Ionian and Adriatic Seas.

Imagine violin harmonics in Santorini’s Nomikos Foundation, surrounded by frescoes of Minoan bull-leapers; or a baroque concerto in Dubrovnik’s 16th-century Sponza Palace. Particularly memorable will be our time in Kefallonia, the island on which Captain Corelli’s Mandolin was filmed. Here, we will enjoy a recital in the stalactite-filled Dhrogarati Cave, whose central chamber, the “Salon of Apotheosis,” was so named for its naturally ideal acoustics.

Virtually every day will feature a musical performance by our extraordinary onboard musicians and performers. We are thrilled to have Lowell Liebermann on our voyage, one of America’s most important composers, whose work is regularly performed by the world’s most distinguished orchestras. Noted by The New York Times for being “as much of a traditionalist as an innovator,” Maestro Liebermann’s music is known both for its technical command and audience appeal. Robert White, the celebrated tenor, whose long career has included singing for six U.S. Presidents, will also be joining us, as well as Timothy Fain, the “charismatic young violinist with a matinee idol profile, strong musical instincts, and first rate chops” (Boston Globe). The ensemble of eminent musicians is rounded out by soprano, Brenda Rae; pianist, William Hobbs; cellist, Scott Kluksdahl and flutist, Marya Martin. We are also delighted to have aboard Martina Arroyo, the world-class soprano, who will share with us the highlights of her illustrious career, which included twenty seasons at the Met, during an informal evening of conversation.

The musical events promise to be utterly magical, and together with the other unique adventures that await you—be it a luncheon at an organic 17th-century farm in Crete or a walking tour of the labyrinthine streets of Montenegro’s stunning medieval city of Kotor—this voyage promises to be nothing short of its own kind of unforgettable opus.

Your home for this enchanting journey will be the graceful, 114-guest, all-suite Corinthian II, which is at once large enough to offer all the amenities of a large cruise ship, such as a spacious restaurant, two comfortable lounges, a gym and a sun deck with a Jacuzzi, but small enough to navigate small inlets and harbors and lend an intimate feel to our musical adventure.

If you love classical music, as well as thought-provoking travel, don’t miss the opportunity to combine both passions on this melodic odyssey in what is arguably the most beautiful part of the Mediterranean.

Offering the Greek Islands'magic, and the turquoise coast's mystery, this voyage aboard the 34-guest Callisto is nothing less than a yachter’s dream. There are many ways to cruise from Athens to Istanbul, but this itinerary is undoubtedly one of the best. After a night in Athens, our group descends from the Acropolis, its monuments basking warmly after the 2004 Olympic restorations, to sail for a day’s touring in romantic Santorini. Then, before navigating to the other stars in the Aegean firmament, we pause in little-known Tilos for a true flavor of authentic, traditional Greek island life. After the Grand Master’s Palace in Rhodes, our course weaves through the inlets of the western Turkish coast for encounters with ancient Lycian rock tombs and majestic Roman theaters in Xanthos, Myra, and the great Turkish triad of Perge, Aspendos, and Side. Following a rare visit to the Ottoman Castle of Mamure—a fortress of almost medieval English appearance—we will enjoy the evocative setting of Olba-Diocaesarea’s ruins before two nights in Istanbul.
